happy B-day jie jie !!!

Today is a special day for a very special person. My sis, Vicki turned 18 today and is now allowed to drink (like that ever stopped her before), drive (better do it here than in M´sia), vote, get married (assume she will soon...haha just kidding) and of course get her personal credit card (which she applied for today - dangerous, dangerous for a spender like her). But of course, now when she is free to decide how she wants to spend it, she can always donate some to her little miss sunshine - ME...

Being back in school sucked but then I got some laughs with my friends and the hours passed quckly, maybe because I had something to look forward to when I got home...

my tuna pizza at Forno Romano...

lovely sis...

and me...

when we got home we had cake...

or a slice more correctly, then I was as pregnant as you can be...and now going to ZzzZz =.=

truly hate Sundays

So tired today...crashed into bed 12.30 a.m yesterday or today =.= and then the time is different now, turning the clock an hour ahead...ZzzzZZz

Had a ladies night at one of my mummy´s best friends, Auntie Kathereine last night. Just me, sis, Emma, mummy and Auntie Katherine. And we got stuck into this japanese movie about a blind old man that was a master in killing people (like they usually are in asian movies) without even being touched by an inch and guess how it ended ? He fell on a stone and died. What was that NONSENSE ! Ahyoh...

I really hate Sundays. Especially this particulary one because tomorrow I´m off to school again. One week´s holiday is never enough. Time just flies away like I didn´t have holiday at all.

Miss the late Sundays in Malaysia when we go out and eat...and my roti canai...

please la, leave the shoes !

Just got home from one of my favourite spots here in Uppsala - East City !!! Me, sis and mum´s favourite lunch getaway. They have this sushi buffet and chinese buffet at the same place, just perfect haha. I love sushi and I can eat like...let´s not go there =.=.

Yesterday I went to IKEA - yes, we are that swedish to shop there often - and I found these at the store next door.

these were just made for me...

and these...gosh they were crying out (literally) "Sandra buy me !". They hurt like shit but me love, even though they are 10 min shoes...

Guess what ? I left the store empty handed =) Cause I decided that I can live without them, even though it took me 30 min to figure that out...I still made up my mind. So proud, we went to IKEA and bought a bonsai tree instead. Naaw it´s soo cute, look...

Hmm...wonder how long it will survive in our family´s care...poor bonsai tree...

living like me

Okay...this is my first blog ever and I´m like totally excited about it haha (weird ?). People always told me I should start my own blog, cause I always have to much to say, even my swedish teacher thought I already had a blog cause I love writing as well...so this is perfect for me ! =) So people that want to read about my life and what I love and hate (or hate is very strong word) can do it without me forcing them to listen to my blablabla...hahaha
So how do you say in UK...SMASHING ! LOL

My life is to long to describe in a short story but it hasn´t always been a fairytale...my mum is from malaysia and my dad is swedish, so that leaves me eurasian =). I live in Sweden but I often wonder how my life would be like if I actually lived in Malaysia as it was planned from the beginning, sometimes I´m happy about it sometimes not. Thank god we at least visit there every year, miss it badly...

this is my small family: sis, me and mummy

So, as I said my life is a long story -and that kind of sounds like I´m 80 which I´m not haha, just 15 but going 16 this year :D...Okay my life in six words...baby-childhood-divorce-hell-LOVE-laughs...quite simple when you put it like that but it wasn´t. Either way, I´m happy now and I´m living. Living the life as Sandra, mei mei (sis calls me) and mandelmassa (mummy calls me). I wouldn´t change anything I´ve been through actually because the road getting to where I am today is invaluable and it´s gonna stay that way. Okay that was a summary of my life, hitting the couch for Rachael Ray now !

Slightly Opinionated

My friend Jocelyn started a new blog called Slightly Opinionated check it out. One day she's gonna be President but until then I get to give her shit for being a nerdy know it all from the barrio. Hmmm...now that I think about it, an idea is coming to mind. Each day Joce, myself and another pal named Ryan have an email thread while we are at work. Well Ry Ry doesn't always hold up his end of the thread so we posted the following ad on CL, that was crazy. Hmm...guess I'll post it here and see what comes of it. ;-) peace

From Jocelyn's MySpace:

My friend and I recently posted a CL ad for an e-mail buddy. It is funny. Allow me to entertain you. Mind you, we are dead serious.

Do you get bored at work? Do you feel that you are surrounded by idiots and crave a connection to the outside world? Then we are looking for you. My friend and I are looking for a third member to join our e-mail thread. We had a third member previously, but he was recently let go from his job and is currently alternating between sleeping, partying and hoing it up with his boyfriend. He is slacking terribly and not holding up his end of the convo. My friend and I worked together previously and have known each other for approx. 6 years. He is male and I am female. We both like men. We are both minorities, but of different ethnicities. The previous member was a majority. He also liked men, so he was slightly a minority (seeing as he can hide his fascination with men and thereby pass as a hetero he isn't allowed to be a card-carrying minority. Then again the card entitles you to a beating by the LAPD, who wants that.). He joined the group with PC rhetoric, we cured him of that and allowed him to "see color", say whatever the hell he wanted and challenge people on their assumptions. He spent all that money on a science degree from a small liberal arts college, but we are the ones that truly educated him. If he wasn't laid out somewhere on market street, covered in lube and confetti he would see this in his inbox and agree with me. On the thread we discuss hot boys, our jobs, the future, past indiscretions, politics, relationships, racial issues, etc. We are socially conscious, but not PC and don't want anyone who is. You can take that bleeding heart liberal crap elsewhere. We send each other news stories that we find interesting. We rant, rave, vent and theorize over the course of the day. We talk a lot of smack. The thread typically runs from 8:30-5 and depending how the day/workload goes a little later. Frequently, we find ourselves laughing out loud and then trying to pretend that the latest e-mail is work related.

If this sounds like a thread you would like to join please e-mail me. Tell me a little about yourself, a dirty joke, your favorite event or just something interesting.

King of the Jews, Risen?

After a second earthquake this morning, a scandal has broken out across the region. Jesus of Nazareth, the proposed "King of the Jews", crucified and buried, is no longer in his final resting place. Followers of Jesus, state that an angel, dressed as lightning came down from above and rolled the stone away, stunning the soldiers while at the same time saying "Be not afraid".

"He is Risen", is the prevailing word on the street as authorities scramble to account for the missing body and the troubling inability of the government to secure the tomb.

Witnesses further report that Jesus himself appeared and spoke to them as they worshipped at his feet. His words were:
"Don't be frightened like that. Go tell my brothers that they are to go to Galilee, and that I'll meet them there."

Religious leaders are unavailable for comment at this time. Reports from the military about sleeping troops and a supposed body snatching conspiracy are surfacing.

Jesus' disciples remain in hiding after his indictment and conviction by the "true powers of Jerusalem" but they are assumed to be converging on Galilee for a joyous and amazing reunion. The word is spreading far and wide:

"HE IS RISEN, HE IS RISEN INDEED!"

Butterfly : Live from Lincoln Center

In my mind, I maintain an idealistic idea that I and my family gather regularly around the television or our stereo and we listen to great artists and art embracing the truly unbelievable technology available today. We do this whenever possible.. every night, or at least weekly as we learn and explore the world around us on our terms.

The reality is of course far from this. Even with my passion for classical singing, I rarely watch recorded opera on video/tv... my justification: "it isn't good enough, it isn't the same" strangely, I justify my laziness with platitudes of guilt targeted at the producer, the sound engineer, the cameraman, and even my TV. Instead, we get a steady course of Law and Order, Disney, movies, and sitcoms.. like everyone else. That is our choice conscious or not.. uggh.

Live from Lincoln Center on Thurs night changed that situation for me through the eyes and will of Emma and Joshua. We arrived home after our Maundy Thursday service and my thinking centered on beginning our Spring Break. I turned on the television and began searching my normals.. National Geographic, Discovery and PBS and there it was. State Theater with the opening of Madam Butterfly as presented by NY City Opera. I thought I might listen to just a bit, I told myself. This was presented in HD, the musical emanated from the speakers of my sound systems beautifully. To my amazement, Emma and Josh came into the room, and sat down with me to watch. In just a few minutes, the questions started coming. They were enjoying the story, the singing, the sounds. They were immersed in the experience of opera right here in our living room.

"Dad, can you sing that?" said Emma.
My response.. "I think so, but I have never performed Pinkerton for real. It is something I'd like to do. "
"This is cool." said Josh

We ended up watching all the way to the end. Emma was mildly stunned when Pinkerton and Kate came to take the boy away. They were intrigued and asked about Butterfly's sense of honor and commitment. They were openly concerned about Pinkerton's abandonment of his "family" and his arrogance in owning/buying a marriage. Ideas like this are in such short supply publicly in today's MTV world. My kids got that something different was on this stage, in this opera. They heard and experienced something that my practiced and mature ears misses. The anguish leading up to the suicide and the compassion and caring demonstrated by Sharpless and Suzuki presented role models for my children that I hadn't considered. They struggled as I do with the idea that the American tenor, decked out in the flag and uniform, could some how be the bad guy. This conversation and experience was certainly worthy of our time.

O how different this is from their normal TV and other entertainment fare, Hannah Montana, Raven and the pop concerts of the "Disney generation".

As I prepared to write my normal sort of "review" of concerts, I had to simply stop. The power of the performance didn't come from the energized and rich voices of Butterfly and Pinkerton. It didn't matter that Pinkerton was tall and handsome, an soooo "American". It didn't come though the rich and luxurious textures of the Bass/Baritone voices in all roles, nor the biting and strident singing of Goro. This production connected with my 7 and 9 year old. A Japanese story, sung in Italian by American and Chinese principles..presented "Live from Lincoln Center".

My thanks go out to all of the foundations and artists who made it possible. My job is now to share my experience with others, and see if I can use opera and classical music more effectively to engage my community. here, now, in Richmond VA. As an opera singer, I am obliged.

Schola Cantorum, James Jordan conducting

The Schola Cantorum from Westminster Choir College presented a wonderful choral exploration of light and sound at Bon Air Presbyterian last night. Under the direction of Dr. James Jordan, this choir of sophomores, 110 strong, overwhelmed a room of choral music lovers' senses with energy and sound. As a Westminster grad, I was proud, inspired, and humbled to see and think of the impact that these musicians will have on their world in years to come.

Craig and Dan stayed with us in our home, and it was even more exciting to get to know two young WCCers.. I stick by my quote.. even at their young age, they do not know how much they know. The WCC experience is different from other conservatories in its community model. These gentlemen shared with Tracee and I about "critical pedagogy" as it is being taught by Frank Abrahams at WCC. Our Da Capo Way is built around this important cutting edge pedagogical theory, even though we didn't know it existed until last night. How exciting...!

Memories and thoughts that matter to me today..
1. I loved sharing the "dirt" about what is really going on with the WCC campus these days. The one thing I know for sure is that alumni get a filtered message.
2. Technology is a key part of these musicians lives. Our study at WCC did not have that element. I wonder what it means and how it will change things for the future. How can I use my technology skills and experience to influence and build on the Da Capo Way?
3. The idea that you can be a musician and have a life too, is still widely questioned.. Can it be done?
4. Musical fulfillment in the church is a difficult if not impossible task.
5. We as musicians learn from everyone. Students and masters alike.
6. People are people no matter their skill or ability. We all have value.
7. Juilliard has the perception of not teaching, but simply providing an arena in which the elite must learn to survive. Not sure about this one, but it was an interesting discussion.
8. Music is passion first! always.. discipline and application matter, but it stems from the heart and it connects people through our hearts.
9. Musical communities are out there, but they aren't always the norm. The story of how the churches in Raleigh combined forces to get a better hall, and support one another in sponsoring the choir's concert was inspiring. I sincerely hope that Da Capo can sponsor that sort of partnership between churches in the Richmond region... think of the possibilities, choirs working together, conductors collaborating rather than competing. There is only upside to the communities, but the congregations have to be convinced to take the risk and "collaborate".. when they don't admit that the even compete.. that is a big "elephant in the room"

Authentic?

How do you know an authentic artist. A good friend recently commented about my singing that it was authentic and honest.  I took it as a profound compliment, and it is what I most hope to pass on to my students.

The goal to pursue excellence in art as a measure against some objective, standard of excellence, like a dog show champion.. is just not right.   Artists and singers are uniquely special in their art.

As a singer, I strive to sing well, but I strive most to be honest about my singing. I want to touch peoples' hearts, and share my soul.  It is never about hitting the notes, and being the best, or at least it shouldn't be.

Bohemians represent an antiestablishmentism paradigm which goes to the extreme but there is something in that pursuit of art that makes a difference in the world. It is a shame, that to make a difference as an artist, almost certainly damns the artist to a lifetime of obscurity, poverty and lack of appreciation.

Bummer..

Deray Davis

I want to know, why my Fridays are like Mondays? For real, I got slammed this afternoon around 3pm and just got done about an hour ago! I know people hate Mondays, but I am beginning to hate Fridays, that's supposed to be the good day!! So I needed to laugh and looked up a hottie comedian, Deray Davis. He is nice on the eyes and makes me laugh! ;-) peace

Ellen talks about Lawrence (Larry) King...

...not sure if anybody else has heard about this (I'm sure you all have, you know how I'm always behind!) basically it was a 15 yr. old gay boy who was murdered because he was gay. I just wanted to take a moment and say good for Ellen. I don't think as a gay person she HAS to do anything for the gay community but I am glad that she brought this up. ;-) peace
